What Is IPPT and Why Does It Matter for NSFs?

The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is the SAF standard fitness assessment. For full-time NSFs, IPPT is a core part of your NS obligations — your score affects your incentive payout and whether you need Remedial Training (RT).

IPPT consists of three stations scored out of 100 points: push-ups (max 25 pts), sit-ups (max 25 pts), and the 2.4km run (max 50 pts). Scoring is age-adjusted, with most NSFs in the 18–24 age band.

What Is Remedial Training (RT)?

RT is mandatory supervised fitness training for NSFs who fail IPPT, designed to bring you to the required fitness standard.

📋 RT — What to Expect
  • Where: SAF fitness centres (e.g., Maju Camp, Kranji Camp)
  • Frequency: Typically 3 sessions per week
  • Duration: Until you pass your IPPT
  • Content: Aerobic conditioning, push-up/sit-up drills, run training
  • After RT: You reattempt IPPT — if you pass, RT obligation is cleared

How NSF IPPT Works — Step by Step

  1. Your unit schedules your IPPT attempt. You will be given advance notice.
  2. You complete three stations: push-ups → sit-ups → 2.4km run on test day.
  3. Your score is calculated automatically. You receive your result on the same day.
  4. If you score 51+: You pass. Gold/Silver incentive is credited if applicable.
  5. If you score below 51 (or zero in any station): You are enrolled in RT.
  6. After RT, you reattempt IPPT. Repeat until you pass.

Top 5 Tips to Pass (or Get Gold)

Tip 1: Train the Run First
The 2.4km run is worth 50 points. Run 3x per week: 2 easy runs + 1 interval session.
Tip 2: Do Push-Ups Every Day
3 sets daily — morning, midday, before bed. After 4 weeks you will see a significant jump.
Tip 3: Fix Your Sit-Up Form Early
Hands behind head, shoulder blades touch mat each rep. Practice slow reps first, then build speed.
Tip 4: Know Your Target Score
Use the IPPT Calculator to simulate your score before test day.
Tip 5: Warm Up Properly
Arrive early, do a light jog + dynamic stretches. A proper warm-up adds 2–3 reps and 20–30s off your run.

NSF IPPT — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NSF IPPT passing score?

NSFs must score at least 51 points out of 100. You must also score at least 1 point in each station. Zero in any station is an automatic fail.

How many IPPT attempts do NSFs get?

NSFs are given opportunities based on their unit schedule. If you fail, you attend RT then reattempt. Check with your platoon sergeant for your unit's specific schedule.

What happens if an NSF fails IPPT?

NSFs who fail must attend Remedial Training (RT) — supervised fitness sessions at an SAF fitness centre. After RT, you reattempt IPPT.

Do NSFs get the IPPT Gold cash incentive?

Yes. Gold (75+ pts) earns $500. Silver (61–74 pts) earns $300. Check ns.sg for the latest amounts.

Can I defer my IPPT if injured?

Yes. Obtain a medical certificate (MC) from a Medical Officer (MO). Speak to your unit MO and inform your superior. Do not attempt IPPT while injured.
